about

With cheekbones like geometry and eyes like sin, sometime Manic Street Preacher and London native Wayne Murray releases The Firebrand, a 4 track EP under the name Boy Cried Wolf on School Records on November 1st. Recorded at Faster Studios in Cardiff with producer Sean Read (Beth Orton/Edwyn Collins) and mixed by Dave Eringa (Manics / Idlewild / Answering Machine), the EP consists of four original songs, one of them featuring lyrics written by Nicky Wire.

A timelessly beautiful EP of North Circular Americana, The Firebrand is the first proper release from Boy Cried Wolf, a band who’ve been slow-burning around London clubs and dives over the last eighteen months. Kicking off with the title track and finishing with the hangover blues of Ballad of a Drunk Man, The Firebrand EP is country rock and western roll with one foot planted firmly in Murray’s hometown. The EP’s aforementioned title track is a glorious dusky campfire sing-along featuring James Dean Bradfield on backing vocals while No Comfort From Your Skin features a set of lyrics penned especially for the band by Nicky Wire. Wire heard the song as a live-to-tape demo and offered to pen some words for the track. To Murray, this was something of a surreal experience having grown up as a huge Manics fan. He says: “From obsessing over listening to a cassette of Generation Terrorists as a kid to playing and touring with the Manics, to having Nick write the words to one of my songs… it was a pinch that felt like a punch to wake me.”

Each track was penned by Wayne over a six-month period at the end of 2009 and recorded at the start of this year in Faster. Strings on each track have been arranged and played by The Vulcan Quartet. Boy Cried Wolf will play the following shows.
